01 — Our Story
35 years of doing it the right way.
CBL Natural Foods was built from an agricultural heritage that predates the export industry it now leads. What started as Cecil Foods in 1989 — a direct farmer sourcing model in Sri Lanka's coconut belt — became the foundation for a global natural foods business that still sources the same way it always has: farm-first, community-rooted, certification-backed.

Story
1989

The Origin
Cecil Foods. The farm comes first.
Cecil Foods Pvt Ltd is established in Minuwangoda, Sri Lanka, by the founding family. The business model is simple and unchanged to this day: contract directly with smallholder farmers, pay fairly, and take responsibility for what happens on the land. The first farmer network covers Kurunegala district — Sri Lanka's coconut heartland.
What this moment built
Direct farmer contracting, not commodity buying. Farm-level quality control, not inspection at the gate. Long-term relationships, not spot purchasing. These three decisions — made in 1989 — are still the backbone of how CBL sources today.

The Organic Decision
Organic before it was commercial.
Long before organic was a premium market category, Cecil Foods transitioned its farmer network to organic practices — not because buyers were demanding it, but because the founding team believed it was the right way to farm. EU organic certification followed, and the first organic export shipments began to Germany and the Netherlands.
What this meant in practice
Transitioning 500+ farmers from conventional to certified organic — without financial incentive at the time. Building the Internal Control System from scratch. Absorbing the audit cost. The decision took conviction, not commercial calculation.

Fairtrade & Scale
Fairtrade embedded. Farmer groups formalised.
Fairtrade certification is pursued and achieved — not as a marketing exercise, but as a structural commitment to price fairness. Farmer groups are formalised across six Sri Lankan provinces. The Fairtrade Premium payment structure is built into every export contract.
The structure built in this era
6 province-wide farmer groups with registered bank accounts. FLOCERT-verified Fairtrade Premium payments. Farmer-governed spending on community priorities — wells, schools, tools. A structure now audited annually and documented per shipment.

03
What we commit to, in practice.
Each commitment below is backed by a certification, an audit, and a documented payment structure. Not a marketing aspiration — a contractual and operational reality.
Values

Fairtrade Commitment
We pay more because it's right.
The Fairtrade floor price is embedded in every farmer contract. Premiums above that floor go directly to farmer group bank accounts — and communities vote on how they're spent. Wells. Schools. Agricultural tools. Crop diversification. This structure is audited annually by FLOCERT and documented per shipment.
What buyers receive as standard
Fairtrade transaction certificate per shipment. Annual FLOCERT audit certificate. Premium payment records — traceable to the farmer group. Full ESG documentation pack (SMETA · BSCI · Amfori) on request.

Organic Commitment
Organic from the soil, not the label.
CBL holds parallel organic certification across USDA NOP, EU Bio, JAS Japan, Canada Organic, Naturland, and Demeter. Every certification is maintained independently — not cross-licensed. Organic Transaction Certificates are issued per shipment in the TRACES system for EU buyers, and by accredited certifying agents for all other markets.
Market-by-market certification
USDA NOP for the US · EU Bio (Regulation 2018/848) with TRACES TC for the EU · JAS for Japan · Canada Organic COR · Naturland for EU/Germany specialty · Demeter for biodynamic claims.

Community Commitment
Farming communities invest in themselves.
CBL's Fairtrade farmer groups are self-governing. Premiums are voted on by the group — not spent by us on their behalf. Over the years, community investments have included drinking water infrastructure, school building and maintenance, agricultural tool libraries, and crop diversification programmes that build household income security beyond coconuts.
What farmer groups have funded
Clean drinking water infrastructure across three districts. Primary school renovation — Kurunegala. Community agricultural tool-share schemes. Crop diversification training — 200+ farmer households. Solar drying facility — Puttalam group.

Environmental Commitment
Zero synthetics. Closed-loop by design.
Biodynamic farms are inherently regenerative — they're designed to be. Closed-loop nutrient cycles, crop rotation, natural pest management, and biodiversity corridors mean our farms sequester more than they deplete. No synthetic fertilisers. No herbicides. No pesticides. Ever. Verified annually.
Environmental standards met
Demeter International biodynamic standards · zero synthetic inputs across all contracted organic farms · biodiversity requirements met · carbon sequestration tracked · waste reduction targets in processing embedded in BRC certification.

04 — Our Heritage

Where it all began.
Minuwangoda, Western Province · Est. 1989
Sri Lanka's coconut triangle — Kurunegala, Puttalam, Gampaha — produces coconut with exceptional fat content and quality consistency. CBL's roots are here, built on 35 years of relationship with the same farming families who grow for us today. The island's agricultural heritage is our supply chain's backbone.
Our Global Reach

One standard.
EU · USA · Japan · Australia · Canada · Middle East · SE Asia
CBL exports to 40+ countries across every major certified organic market. The same product, the same certifications, the same quality standard — whether the buyer is a supermarket in Germany, a retailer in the US, or a food manufacturer in Japan. No market-specific compromises.
Supply Chain Integrity
Not because we say so. Because the evidence does.
Every claim below is backed by a certification, an annual audit, or a documented contract structure. We've been building this supply chain for 35 years — not assembling it for a pitch deck.
